Travel Tips

🌍 Helpful Tips for Traveling in Uganda 🇺🇬 & Rwanda 🇷🇼

Dress comfortably and respectfully. Lightweight, breathable clothing is ideal for most days, but pack long sleeves, long pants, and neutral colors for gorilla trekking and wildlife activities. When visiting villages, memorials, or religious sites, dress modestly out of respect.

Carry some local currency. Uganda uses the Ugandan Shilling (UGX) and Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF). Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and upscale lodges, but cash is essential for tips, local markets, souvenirs, and small vendors. Newer U.S. dollar bills are sometimes accepted for tourism-related services.

Stay hydrated at all times. Trekking, safaris, and walking tours can be physically demanding, and the equatorial sun can be intense even when temperatures feel mild—always carry water with you.

Listen closely to your guides and rangers. Local guides are highly trained and provide critical safety instructions, cultural insight, and wildlife etiquette—especially during gorilla trekking, where following directions is mandatory.

Be security-conscious in busy areas. Use hotel safes for passports and valuables, avoid displaying expensive items, and keep phones and bags secure in crowded public spaces.

Pack sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, and a hat. Sun exposure is strong, and insect protection is important in forested and rural areas.

Plan for early mornings. Gorilla trekking and safari activities start early for optimal wildlife viewing and cooler conditions—rest well the night before.

Bring a universal power adapter and a power bank. Power outages can occur in rural lodge areas, so having backup charging options for phones and cameras is highly recommended.

Additional Tips

💱 Uganda 🇺🇬 & Rwanda 🇷🇼: Currency & Money Matters

Traveling through Uganda and Rwanda is straightforward with a bit of advance planning. Both countries rely primarily on local currency, with card acceptance limited outside major cities and lodges—so cash planning is important.

🇺🇬 Uganda

Currency Basics

  • Currency: Ugandan Shilling

  • Symbol: USh

  • Abbreviation: UGX

  • Typical Exchange Rate:
    1 USD ≈ 3,700–3,900 UGX
    (Rates fluctuate—always check before traveling)

🇷🇼 Rwanda

Currency Basics

  • Currency: Rwandan Franc

  • Symbol: FRw

  • Abbreviation: RWF

  • Typical Exchange Rate:
    1 USD ≈ 1,250–1,350 RWF
    (Rates fluctuate—always check before traveling)

Practical Money Tips for Travelers

Currency Exchange

  • Bring clean, newer U.S. dollar bills (issued 2013 or later)—older bills may not be accepted.

  • Exchange USD at banks, hotels, or authorized exchange bureaus.

  • Airport exchange counters are convenient but may offer slightly higher rates.

  • Avoid exchanging money with street vendors.

ATMs

  • ATMs are available in Kampala and Kigali, but access is limited in rural or trekking regions.

  • Visa is more commonly accepted than Mastercard; American Express is rarely accepted.

  • Notify your bank of international travel to avoid card blocks.

  • Some ATMs may have daily withdrawal limits or foreign transaction fees—plan accordingly.

Cash vs. Cards

  • Credit cards are accepted at major hotels, lodges, and upscale restaurants.

  • Cash is essential for:

    • Tips

    • Local markets

    • Souvenirs

    • Smaller lodges and rural areas

  • Carry small denominations for ease of use.

Tipping Etiquette

  • Tipping is customary and appreciated.

  • Gorilla trekking guides, rangers & porters: Tips are strongly encouraged

  • Safari guides & drivers: Tip based on service quality

  • Hotel porters & staff: Small tips are appreciated

(Suggested tipping ranges will be provided closer to departure.)

Budgeting (Approximate Costs)

  • Coffee or soft drink: $1–$3 USD equivalent

  • Casual meal: $8–$15 USD

  • Lodge meals: Often included

  • Souvenirs/handicrafts: $5–$50+ USD

Safety & Convenience

  • Keep cash and valuables secure, especially in busy areas.

  • Use ATMs inside banks or hotels when possible.

  • Carry a mix of USD and local currency for flexibility.

  • Card machines and internet connectivity may be unreliable in rural areas—cash is king outside cities.
